Tetra: a new JavaScript scroller with RSS newsfeed integration Tetra is a new JavaScript scroller that features integration with RSS newsfeeds, and AJAX for background updating--two technologies to ensure that the scroller content is always fresh and up-to-date. OREM, Utah--11 July 2005--Webmasters wanting scrolling content on their sites have a new option that can automatically keep itself up-to-date and can update its content without requiring the webpage to be reloaded. Tetra, a new DHTML scroller from Gecko Tribe, LLC, brings RSS newsfeeds and the "AJAX" technology recently popularized by Google Maps and GMail to the world of scroller scripts. RSS newsfeeds offer a stream of topically focused, regularly updated information, which in many cases can be republished by third party websites. Tetra includes code to integrate with CaRP, Gecko Tribe's RSS to HTML converter, enabling it to display single or multiple aggregated RSS newsfeeds. CaRP periodically checks for updates to the newsfeeds, keeping the scroller contents up-to-date automatically. AJAX, or "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML", is an emerging technology that allows the contents of webpages to be updated without reloading the entire webpage. Tetra can use AJAX to update the contents of the scroller on the fly. Tetra uses a simple XML format that could easily be used by applications other than CaRP to enable AJAX updating of other content in addition to RSS newsfeeds. The Tetra package includes a setup script to configure the size, speed and other options for each scroller. It can also be used to enter static data into the scroller, and to handle all the details of RSS integration with CaRP. The package also includes a script for generating static XML files for use with Tetra's AJAX feature.
Pricing and Availability CaRP is available from the CaRP homepage. A free version is available, as well as two commercial versions with additional features, which are priced at $14.97 and $24.97 for a single user, $39.97 and $69.97 for a single server, and $79.97 and $129.97 for a company license. Various directories of RSS newsfeeds can be found online, including Gecko Tribe's directory, Chordata.
